Isn’t it intriguing how a seemingly ordinary park can hold chapters of history? Today, we’re at Dunn Loring Park. This place is more than just trees and trails.

Dunn Loring’s story starts with General William McKee Dunn and his wife, Elizabeth Lanier Dunn. They bought about 600 acres back in 1886. This land was near the Washington, Ohio, and Western Railroad. It’s now the Washington and Old Dominion Regional Trail.

The Dunns transferred the land to the Loring Land and Improvement Company. This company included George B. Loring. He was a former congressman. Also in the company was George H. LeFetra. He owned a temperance hotel in Washington.

In 1887, the Town of Dunn Loring was advertised. The Loring Land and Improvement Company built a railroad station and a post office. But General Dunn passed away. Development slowed.

The Spanish-American War brought new life. Camp Russell A. Alger was founded. Dunn Loring grew and prospered. Carl Sandburg trained here. He was a celebrated author and poet. Sandburg Street is named after him.

Fairfax Shield McCandlish bought the developers’ interests in 1912. He consolidated parcels and subdivided the land. After World War II, the area grew as part of Metropolitan Washington, D.C.

Today, Dunn Loring Park offers a green escape. It’s a place to reflect on the area’s rich past. The park stands as a testament to those who shaped this community. From General Dunn’s vision to the soldiers who trained here, Dunn Loring Park connects us to history. It also invites us to appreciate the present. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh air.
