Dundas Valley

From a quiet creek to bustling suburb, Dundas Valley holds a captivating story. Dundas Valley sits 21 kilometers northwest of Sydney’s central business district. It’s nestled within the City of Parramatta, part of both Northern Sydney and Greater Western Sydney. Originally called “The Ponds,” after the creek that shaped the valley, Dundas Valley boasts a rich history. The Ponds Creek meanders through the valley’s heart, surrounded by steep and gentle slopes. The area’s parks, like the 6.5-hectare Dundas Park with its two playgrounds, picnic areas, and Scout/Guide hall, offer tranquil escapes. Another popular spot is Sir Thomas Mitchell Reserve, a 3.9-hectare park situated on the site of a former quarry. This quarry, opened in 1832 by Thomas Mitchell, supplied “blue metal” for road construction well into the 20th century. Interestingly, the quarry unveiled a 200-250 million-year-old volcanic formation, attracting renowned scientists like Charles Darwin and Douglas Mawson. The first private land grants in Sydney, dating back to 1791, were given in what is now North East Dundas, along with neighboring Dundas Valley and Ermington. Fourteen former convicts and their families received these grants along the Ponds and Subiaco Creeks. The name Dundas first appeared in 1799, possibly after a parish in England or perhaps Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville. The valley transformed during the 1950s and 1960s with the introduction of public housing. Officially recognized as a suburb in 2007, Dundas Valley retains echoes of its past in its street names. Streets like Sirius, Supply, Alexander, Charlotte, and Friendship commemorate First Fleet ships, while Neptune honors a Second Fleet vessel. Other streets bear the names of later settlers like Dorahy, Yates, Rumsey, Calder, and Stewart. Today, Dundas Valley thrives with a small shopping center, parks like Curtis Oval with its bike and walking track, and various churches and sports clubs. The Philip Ruddock Water Park offers a refreshing escape in summer, and the Dundas United Recreation Club at Curtis Oval caters to diverse sporting interests. Dundas Valley truly embodies the layers of time, from its ancient geological features and early settlers to its modern suburban life.
