Thousands of seals. That’s what greets you at Duiker Island. A rocky outcrop just off the coast of Hout Bay. This isn’t just any island. It’s a bustling metropolis of blubbery creatures. A haven for Cape fur seals. These aren’t your average seals. They’re the largest of nine fur seal species. Think sealions but with extra charm. They have external ears. Clever manoeuvrable flippers help them navigate both land and sea.

Duiker Island. Also known as Seal Island. But don’t confuse it with the other Seal Island in False Bay. That one’s shark territory. Duiker Island. The waters here are too cold for great whites. The seals are safe. Relatively speaking.

Thousands of these seals call this small island home. Imagine the sounds. The barking. The splashing. The sheer cacophony of seal life. They’re incredibly social. Males have harems of up to fifty females. They’ve even figured out how to time their births. They delay fertilisation. Birthing happens in summer. Smart huh? This ensures the pups survive the coldest weather.

But the seals aren’t the only residents. Over twenty species of seabirds share this space. Kelp gulls are common. Skuas are also here. These are formidable predators. They even feast on smaller birds. Humpback whales and dolphins have been spotted nearby. It’s a vibrant ecosystem. Right before your eyes.

You can’t go ashore. Adolescent seals are fiercely territorial. But you can get close. Boat tours offer amazing views. Some even let you snorkel with the seals. Imagine swimming alongside these magnificent creatures. They’re curious. They might even swim right up to you. Gaze into their big doleful eyes. An unforgettable experience.

Duiker Island. A small island with a big personality. A place teeming with life. It’s a reminder of the incredible biodiversity of South Africa’s coastline. A hidden gem. Right here in Hout Bay. A testament to nature’s power and beauty. A must-see for any visitor. Don’t miss it.
