Perhaps Dübendorf’s greatest claim to fame is its surprising aviation history. Dübendorf sits as the fourth-largest town in the canton of Zürich. It offers a unique blend of suburban charm and historical significance. Let’s delve into the story of Dübendorf.

Dübendorf’s story stretches back to prehistoric times. Artifacts from the Stone and Bronze Ages have been unearthed here. The town’s first recorded mention appears in 946 as Tuobilindorf. Ownership of Dübendorf and its church can be traced back to the Reichenau Abby around the 8th century. This monastery exerted considerable influence over Dübendorf for centuries.

Adding intrigue to Dübendorf’s past is the tale of Schyterburg. This forgotten castle site believed to be built in the 10th or 11th century. Its ruins lie hidden within Dübendorf’s boundaries.

Then there’s Dübelstein Castle. From 1487 to 1489, it was home to Hans Waldmann. He was the former mayor of Zürich. Waldmann’s story took a tragic turn. After his execution in 1489, his properties were seized by Zürich. Dübelstein Castle met a fiery end in 1615. Today, the ruined mound stands as a listed building. Excavations in 1942 and 1943 restored its foundations. In 1998, the Pro Waldmannsburg association acquired it for a symbolic one Swiss franc.

Dübendorf’s landscape plays a vital role in its identity. The Glatt river bisects the city. It flows from the Greifensee. Dübendorf nestles on the northern side of the Adlisberg. Hamlets like Gockhausen and Geeren dot the terrace.

Now, about that aviation history. During World War II, Switzerland’s neutrality saw some interesting events unfold. Between 1943 and 1945, 166 American bombers sought refuge in Switzerland. Some faced unfortunate fates. 41 crashed or made crash landings.

But here’s where Dübendorf enters the picture. The Swiss Army stored dismantled bombers in hangars at Dübendorf and Kloten. These aircraft eventually were scrapped after the war. In August 1945, a serious accident occurred. A C-87 crashed in the Dietlikon forest.

Dübendorf’s airfield became a hub of activity. American soldiers and Swiss personnel worked together. They repaired and prepared the bombers for flight. By late August, the first bombers were ready to return to England. The unfavorable space conditions only allowed takeoffs with low payloads.

An average of 200 hours was spent on each aircraft. On October 20, 1945, the last three interned aircraft departed. Before leaving, the Mustang pilot buzzed the Dübendorf airfield and Zürich’s Bahnhofstrasse.

Dübendorf’s story is one of unexpected turns. It is a town where prehistoric relics rub shoulders with tales of wartime aviation. Dübendorf stands as a testament to Switzerland’s captivating past.
