Balmain’s oldest licensed pub stands before us. It’s the Dry Dock Hotel, a true community local. Established in 1857, the Dry Dock Hotel has quenched the thirst of Balmain residents for over 166 years.

The Dry Dock Hotel’s story begins well before its establishment. The land it occupies was granted to Dr William Balmain in 1800. Governor John Hunter made the grant. Thomas Wakfer bought the property in 1867 from James McCallum. He paid A£295.

Nearby, Mort’s Dock boomed. This dockyard brought housing and employment to Balmain. The Dry Dock Hotel owes much of its early history to these dock workers. They needed refreshment and accommodation. The dock’s main gate was just across Cameron Street.

For a brief period in the early 1870s, the hotel was called The Clarendon. It reverted to the Dock Inn until 1874. Finally, it was renamed the Dry Dock Hotel. Mort’s Dock provided patrons until 1957. Rising costs and labour disputes forced the dock into liquidation.

The Dry Dock Hotel claims another first. It opened one of the earliest beer gardens where the restaurant is now. Betty “Bottles” Holloway, publican from 1979 to 1982, introduced live music to local pubs.

Architecturally, the Dry Dock Hotel is a two-storey rendered masonry building. It’s listed on the Inner West Council’s heritage register. The Dry Dock Hotel has seen structural changes. The most dramatic was the removal of the verandah in the 1920s. It was part of a modernization effort. The current facade dates from the 1930s.

Today, the Dry Dock Hotel offers three unique settings. There is a classic pub bar for 90 people. A refined lounge bar accommodates 120. A separate dining room seats 100.

The Dining Room is a modern European bistro and grill. It features an open kitchen. A Josper Charcoal Grill and Oven are central to the dining experience. You will also find a sit-up oyster bar. A semi-private dining room offers a more intimate setting. A floor-to-ceiling glass wall provides views onto a lush green courtyard garden.

The Lounge Bar offers a more relaxed space. Vaulted ceilings and skylights create an airy atmosphere. Plush leather booths and a classic Chesterfield invite relaxation. A double-fronted wood-burning fireplace adds warmth and charm.

The Dry Dock Hotel continues to be a community hub. It has a public bar. It’s classic and comfortable. Sixteen beers are on tap. You can also find an expansive list of wine and premium spirits. Classic cocktails are also available.

The Dry Dock Hotel also has a sports lounge. It shows live sports with TAB facilities. The Dry Dock Hotel is a place where history and community intertwine. From its humble beginnings serving dockworkers to its modern incarnation, it remains a Balmain institution. So step inside, raise a glass, and soak in the atmosphere of this historic pub. The Dry Dock Hotel awaits.
