Did the walls of Drummoyne Presbyterian Church ever echo with hymns sung in a pub? It might sound strange, but the story of this church, right here on College Street, actually began in the 1880s in a pub. The pub stood at the corner of Lyons Road and Victoria Road. Imagine the clinking of glasses mingling with the voices of early worshippers. Drummoyne Presbyterian Church, as we know it today, stands as a testament to the growth of the Presbyterian community in Drummoyne. The original church, built behind the current structure, became too small for the growing congregation. This beautiful building we stand before was erected in 1912. The foundation stones were laid on October 26th, 1912, by Mrs. J. H. Goodlet, wife of Colonel Goodlet who had allocated the land, and Mr. Henry Perdriau, the church treasurer. The church, with a capacity of 420, officially opened its doors on April 26th, 1913. It was dedicated as a memorial to the late Reverend George Grimm. The original church building now serves as a hall. The new church was celebrated not only for its increased capacity but also for its remarkable acoustics, praised by Reverend Professor M’Intyre during his sermon at the dedication service. The congregation generously contributed to the church furnishings, including a magnificent pipe organ. Reverend S. B. Reid, the minister at the time, received a new gown and cassock as a gift from the women of the congregation. Inside, you’ll find a timber honor roll commemorating the men and women of the congregation who served in both World Wars. Drummoyne Presbyterian Church has journeyed from a pub to a magnificent structure. It serves as a symbol of faith and community.
