“Is this the place where the drums guide the soul to enlightenment?” a curious traveler might ask, standing before the Dramagang Lhakhang. This sacred monastery, nestled amidst the breathtaking Bhutanese landscape, is not just a place of worship but a cradle of ancient traditions and vibrant culture. Dramagang Lhakhang was built in the 16th century by Ani Cheten Zangmo, a woman of great devotion and the granddaughter of the revered treasure revealer, Terton Pema Lingpa. Her vision was to propagate the Nyingmapa teachings, the ancient school of Tibetan Buddhism, throughout the eastern reaches of Bhutan. And so, Dramagang Lhakhang became a beacon of faith, its halls echoing with the chants of monks and the rhythmic beat of drums. This rhythm is not just music, but the soul of the Drametse Ngacham, the ‘Dance of the Drums of Drametse’. Imagine, if you will, twelve dancers adorned in vibrant yellow skirts and enigmatic animal masks. They move with a powerful grace, their drums throbbing in unison, a symphony of sound and motion. The dance, born within the very walls of Dramagang Lhakhang, narrates the journey to enlightenment, a tribute to Guru Rinpoche’s celestial abode. Recognized by UNESCO as a ‘Masterpiece of the World Intangible Heritage’, the dance embodies the very essence of Bhutanese identity, a spiritual legacy passed down through generations. A visit to Dramagang Lhakhang is incomplete without witnessing this spectacle. As the drums reverberate through the air, one can’t help but feel a sense of profound connection to the divine, a testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition.
