He looked at the map of Canada, saw where Vancouver was. It was in 1952 and that’s how H. Gobind Khorana chose this city. Today, we honor Dr. H. Gobind Khorana. He was a man whose work unraveled the very code of life.

Dr. H. Gobind Khorana’s journey began in a small village. Raipur was in Punjab, British India. His father, a taxation clerk, valued education. Despite poverty, Khorana excelled. He obtained degrees from Punjab University. A government fellowship took him to England. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Liverpool.

A postdoctoral year with Vladimir Prelog in Zurich shaped his scientific philosophy. A later fellowship allowed him to work with G. W. Kenner and A. R. Todd in Cambridge. These experiences sparked his interest in proteins and nucleic acids.

In 1952, Dr. H. Gobind Khorana accepted a position at the British Columbia Research Council in Vancouver. The facilities were limited. However, he had freedom to explore. He began his groundbreaking work on nucleic acids. He synthesized important biomolecules.

His wife, Esther Elizabeth Sibler, brought stability to his life. They met in Switzerland. She provided a sense of purpose after years away from his homeland. They had three children.

In 1960, Dr. H. Gobind Khorana moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He became co-director of the Institute for Enzyme Research. His research focused on RNA’s role in protein synthesis. This work led to the Nobel Prize in 1968. He shared it with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley. They interpreted the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis.

Dr. H. Gobind Khorana built different RNA chains. He used enzymes to produce proteins. The amino acid sequences of these proteins solved the puzzle of the genetic code.

He became a US citizen in 1966. In 1970, Dr. H. Gobind Khorana joined MIT. He was the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Biology and Chemistry. Later, he became a board member at The Scripps Research Institute. He retired from MIT in 2007.

Dr. H. Gobind Khorana was the first scientist to chemically synthesize oligonucleotides. In 1972, he completed the total synthesis of a functional gene outside a living organism. This was a world first. His work has been automated and commercialized. Scientists use his findings for genome editing.

After the mid-1970s, his lab studied bacteriorhodopsin. This protein converts light energy into chemical energy. Later, his lab studied rhodopsin. Rhodopsin is a visual pigment.

Dr. H. Gobind Khorana’s awards include the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize and the Lasker Foundation Award. He also received the National Medal of Science. India awarded him the Padma Vibhushan in 1969.

Dr. H. Gobind Khorana died in 2011. He left behind a legacy of scientific achievement and mentorship. He inspired countless students. His work continues to shape our understanding of life’s fundamental processes. Remember Dr. H. Gobind Khorana as a pioneer. He unlocked the secrets of our genetic code.
