Have you ever seen a house that whispers stories from the early 19th century? Here at the Don Bank Museum, time seems to stand still. Don Bank Museum is the oldest wooden house in North Sydney. It’s a rare example of an early timber slab house. The house is nestled within a charming Victorian garden. The Sydney Morning Herald once described Don Bank Museum as a “pretty marine villa with commanding views of Port Jackson”. That was back in 1854. Don Bank Museum started its life between 1853 and 1858. It was built for Edward Wollstonecraft. Originally part of a much larger land grant, the house has witnessed the changing landscape of North Sydney. Inside the Don Bank Museum, the displays tell tales of the house itself, its occupants, and the evolving social history of the area. The museum’s collection includes around 500 clothing and textile items and about 300 household items. The kitchen, with its array of historical objects, offers a glimpse into domestic life of the past. The costume and textile collection is also quite extensive, showcasing fashions and fabrics from bygone eras. Don Bank Museum isn’t just a building. It’s a portal to the past, offering a unique perspective on North Sydney’s rich history.
