What secrets does the Dolnomlýnský rybník hold? This tranquil pond, also known as Mlejňák či Bartůněk, sits serenely on the Kunratický potok in Kunratice, Prague 4. Dolnomlýnský rybník isn’t just a picturesque spot. It plays a vital role as a water reservoir, supports fish populations, and enhances the landscape. It once powered Bartůňkův mlýn. A 4.3-meter-high earthen dam, along which runs the street “K Borovíčdku”, contains its waters. The surface area of Dolnomlýnský rybník spans 6,873 square meters. Its total volume reaches an impressive 10,694 cubic meters. Upstream along the Kunratický potok, you’ll find Hornomlýnský rybník (Vernerák). Downstream lies the Labuť pond. Dolnomlýnský rybník first appeared on maps around 1750. A major renovation took place in 1982. This included the construction of two safety spillways, the reinforcement of the dam, and repairs to the bottom outlet. Unfortunately, the quality of this work was subpar. A complete reconstruction became necessary in 2011. This involved rebuilding both safety spillways and repairing the damaged masonry of the retaining wall. The bottom outlet and drainage pipes were also renewed. The surrounding vegetation underwent a transformation, too, with the dam crowned with grass and native trees like alders and willows planted along the banks. The revitalization of Dolnomlýnský rybník ensured its safety, preserving it for future generations while enhancing its ecological and aesthetic value.
