What began in 1973 in Nerima Tokyo now stands before us Doga Kobo Inc. It is a renowned Japanese animation studio. Founded by Hideo Furusawa and Megumu Ishiguro Doga Kobo has been creating anime for decades.
Doga Kobo started as a limited company in July 1973. It was reorganized as a joint-stock company in 2006. Megumu Ishiguro initially led the company. He worked alongside Hideo Furusawa an experienced animator and manga artist. In 2006 Ryo Ishiguro became the president.
Doga Kobo’s early years involved personnel training. They built a foundation for animation. The studio aimed to explore new possibilities in animation. They challenged themselves using cultivated technology and experience. Furusawa’s zeal inspired them.
Notably in July 2024 Kadokawa Corporation acquired Doga Kobo. This acquisition marked a significant milestone. Doga Kobo became a subsidiary of Kadokawa.
Doga Kobo gained recognition for various anime adaptations. These include yuri or yuri-ish anime like Koihime Muso and YuruYuri. The studio is also known for romantic shows. Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun Plastic Memories and Tada Never Falls in Love are some examples. They also produce slice-of-life comedy series. Gabriel DropOut and Himouto Umaru-chan are popular titles.
More recently Doga Kobo achieved wide popularity. This was due to the anime adaptation of Oshi no Ko. It is a manga series written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari.
Doga Kobo’s animation extends to television series OVAs and films. Myself Yourself marked their entry into animation production in 2007. Other notable works include A Bridge to the Starry Skies and Love Lab. They also co-animated Majestic Prince with Orange.
Doga Kobo values animator treatment. In April 2020 they established Doga Kobo Animation Department Co. Ltd. This division focuses on improving animator conditions.
Several key people have contributed to Doga Kobo’s success. Megumu Ishiguro was the founder and first president. Ryo Ishiguro has served as the second president since 2006. Kei Ishiguro Tazuko Fukudo and Hajime Kamata are directors.
Animation producers play a crucial role. Kenichi Motohashi Yousuke Nakamura Shouta Umemhara Taiki Sekine Saori Wakabayashi Shingo Saitou and Ryou Kobayashi have all contributed.
Doga Kobo continues to produce new anime. The Shiunji Family Children is slated for 2025. Captivated by You and Let’s Go Karaoke are also planned for 2025. Oshi no Ko 3rd Season is scheduled for 2026. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian will also have a 2nd Season.
