“Imagine,” a voice echoes on the wind. That is the voice of Dobroyd Head. It is a place where history and natural beauty intertwine. Dobroyd Head is a headland in Balgowlah Heights. It is part of Sydney Harbour National Park.

Let’s step back in time to January 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip noted Aboriginal people living in caves. These caves were located at what is now Wellings Reserve. This area holds many Aboriginal sites. A midden at Reef Beach tells a silent story. A storm in May 1974 exposed human remains.

Originally, Dobroyd Head was named Dobroyd Point. Simeon Lord, an early 19th-century landowner, chose the name. Dobroyd Castle was the home of his mother, Ann Fielden. Lord gifted the land to the Crown in 1840. He stipulated that the name must be kept.

In 1871, the government set aside 100 hectares as a defence reserve. This excluded privately owned lands. These included Reef Beach, Forty Baskets Beach, and Grotto Point. Commander John Thomas Ewing Gowlland tragically drowned off Dobroyd Head in 1874. A plaque commemorates him here.

Fast forward to 1914. The government steamer, SS Kate, sank. The Manly ferry Bellubera struck it off the headland. The Dobroyd Scenic Drive opened in 1938. Manly mayor Percy Nolan funded the project.

Between 1923 and 1963, small cabins dotted Crater Cove. People used them as weekend retreats. They remained occupied until the 1980s.

In the late 1950s, Manly Council fought to preserve Dobroyd Head. Alderman Frank Preacher led the charge. Lands Minister Jack Renshaw approved the removal of lands from sale. He transferred preservation to Manly Council. In 1975, the area became part of Sydney Harbour National Park.

Let’s look towards Arabanoo lookout. It is named for Arabanoo. He was the first Aboriginal man to live among European settlers. This lookout offers stunning views. You can see North and South Head and the Pacific Ocean. It is a fantastic spot for whale watching. Signs provide historical information about the area.

Today, Dobroyd Head stands as a testament to preservation. It represents the intersection of natural beauty and historical events. As you gaze out at the panoramic views, remember the stories. Remember the people who shaped this land. Feel the echoes of the past. They resonate within this remarkable headland.
