Gleaming steel reflects the city’s vibrant pulse. This is the Dobell Memorial Sculpture. A towering monument of polished stainless steel it stands almost 20 meters high. Six cubes stacked atop each other create a striking modern form.

The Dobell Memorial Sculpture isn’t just a pretty face. It commemorates Sir William Dobell one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. Dobell was a master of landscape and portraiture. His Archibald Prize wins are legendary. He won three times a feat unmatched by many.

Herbert Flugelman the sculptor was quite the character himself. Born in Vienna he arrived in Australia in 1938. His life was a testament to perseverance. Flugelman juggled various jobs to support his art. He even worked as a steeplejack. Imagine the heights he scaled both literally and figuratively.

The sculpture’s journey wasn’t smooth. It was initially met with controversy. People weren’t immediately won over by its modern design. It was even nicknamed “The Silver Shish Kebab”. It was eventually moved from Martin Place to its current location.

Interestingly enough you might notice some skateboarder marks on the lower section. These are remnants from its Martin Place days when it was a less-than-official skate ramp. Now it stands tall a tribute to both Dobell and Flugelman.

The Dobell Memorial Sculpture isn’t merely a sculpture. It’s a story. It’s a story of artistic achievement. It’s a story of overcoming challenges. It’s a reflection of Sydney itself. A city of contrasts old and new bold and beautiful. A city that embraces its past while reaching for the future. And this towering sculpture stands as a lasting testament.
