Divadlo Broadway opened its doors in 2002. It quickly became known for its focus on musical productions. But the story goes back further. The theatre is part of the Palace Sevastopol. This palace was built in a functionalist style in 1938. The palace connects Na Příkopě and Celetná streets through the Broadway Passage. This passage gives the theatre its name. The entire palace is a protected building.
The theatre’s first show was the musical Cleopatra. It debuted on February 22, 2002. Four talented actresses played Cleopatra. They were Bára Basiková, Ilona Csáková, Monika Absolonová and Radka Fišarová. Each brought their own flair to the role.
Before Divadlo Broadway, there was a cinema. It was called Kino Broadway and Kino Sevastopol. The cinema closed in 1998. The space was renovated and transformed into the theatre we see today.
Jaromír Pizinger designed the theatre. Inside are dark blue seats and dark wood accents. The stage has two turntables. One even has a trapdoor. These features allow for creative and dynamic performances.
