Picture this a moated castle now a dry moat surrounds Ditzinger Schloss. This is no ordinary castle. It stands proudly in Ditzingen a town near Stuttgart. Ditzinger Schloss is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a living testament to centuries of history. Originally a water castle built on even older foundations it dates back to the 12th or 13th century.

The castle we see today took shape mostly in the 15th and 16th centuries. Imagine the skilled hands of builders shaping its walls. The original castle was partially destroyed in 1543. It was rebuilt a year later under the rule of the Wurttemberg family. A significant event occurred in 1693. The Schloss was again partially destroyed but rebuilt yet again. Over the centuries ownership changed hands. In 1891 it passed to the Hiller von Gaertringen family. The main building is two stories tall. The upper level is half-timbered with a hipped roof. An attached building may have once been a storage area for the estate. These structures create a two-winged complex. A wall surrounds the entire Schloss.

The Schloss sits within a two-hectare park. Sadly a 17th or 18th-century barn on the grounds burned down in 1979. Today the park is open to the public. The Schloss itself remains privately owned.
