Did you ever hear a motto as inspiring as “The Mountains and Rivers Inspire Us”? That’s the motto of the District of North Vancouver. It perfectly captures the spirit of this incredible place. Right here, nestled between the Burrard Inlet and the Coast Mountains, you’ll find a community shaped by nature’s grandeur. The District of North Vancouver isn’t just a suburb of Vancouver. It’s a distinct municipality with its own rich history and vibrant culture. The District of North Vancouver was officially incorporated in 1891. But its story began long before that. For thousands of years, the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations called this land home. Their connection to these mountains and rivers continues to this day. In the late 19th century, the logging industry put the District of North Vancouver on the map. Pioneer Mills, founded in 1862, drew settlers eager to work in the region’s vast forests. Around this time, Sewell “Sue” Prescott Moody established Moodyville. This community, complete with its own school, thrived until the mill’s closure in 1901. In the early 1900s, the District of North Vancouver experienced a real estate boom that attracted speculators from all over, even the famous author Rudyard Kipling. The District of North Vancouver’s economy diversified with the arrival of Wallace Shipyards in 1906. The shipyards became a major employer. Its legacy can still be seen in the buildings that remain. Today, while the logging and shipbuilding industries have declined, the District of North Vancouver has embraced new opportunities. The film industry has transformed the area into “Hollywood North”. Many movies and TV shows, including five seasons of “The X-Files”, have been filmed here. The District of North Vancouver boasts incredible natural beauty. Two suspension bridges, Capilano and Lynn Canyon, offer breathtaking views. Grouse Mountain and Mount Seymour provide year-round recreation. The District of North Vancouver also features neighborhood centers like Edgemont Village, Upper Lonsdale, Lynn Valley, Main Street, Parkgate, and Deep Cove. Each area has its own unique character and charm. The District of North Vancouver has evolved over the years. It has adapted to changing economic times. But one thing has remained constant. That is its deep connection to the mountains and rivers that inspire its motto.
