Discovery College

Opened in August 2009, Discovery College stands before us as a beacon of international education. Discovery College replaced the former Bauhinia School. This modern marvel serves the local and expatriate communities of Hong Kong. Discovery College offers primary and secondary education on a single, dynamic campus. Discovery College is part of the English Schools Foundation (ESF). The school operates under the Private Independent School Scheme. This means 70% of its students must be Hong Kong permanent residents. The history of Discovery College traces back to 1999, with plans for its creation as a private ESF institution. Unlike government-funded schools, Discovery College receives no recurrent government subsidies. The land for the Discovery Bay campus was granted by the Education and Manpower Bureau in 2001. The construction took place between 2003 and 2008. The design was conceived by Integrated Design Associates. The impressive 70,000 sq ft campus came at a cost of HK$290 million. The Hong Kong Government contributed HK$137 million to this project. Discovery College, run by ESF Educational Services Limited, is responsible for repaying ESF its capital costs of HK$168 million within 20 years of its opening. Before settling in its permanent home, Discovery College temporarily occupied a site in Lai King in 2007. This temporary campus housed the primary section and merged with the existing Bauhinia School. Approximately two-thirds of the student body transitioned from Bauhinia School. Finally, in August 2008, the 450 students moved to the current Discovery Bay campus. Discovery College offers a comprehensive academic journey from Year 1 to Year 13. It embraces the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. This includes the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP). Recently, it has added the Career-related Programme (CP). The CP provides a personalized pathway for students aged 16-19 with focused career aspirations. Discovery College is more than just academics. It fosters a vibrant community through its five houses: Jin Shu (metal), Qing Mu (wood), Liu Shui (water), Lie Huo (fire), and Re Tu (earth).
