Founded in 1849 Diocesan College Bishops stands proudly in Rondebosch Cape Town. This isn’t just any school. It’s a cornerstone of South African history. Bishops was established by Robert Gray the first Anglican Bishop of Cape Town. He and his wife Sophy founded several other schools too. Their vision was ambitious. They wanted to create Anglican schools based on the English public school system. They aimed to instill British culture in the country.

Lewis Michell a South African banker championed the school’s scholarship system. This system allowed talented students to pursue further education at Oxford or Cambridge. Even Cecil Rhodes a man of considerable influence was persuaded to support the scholarship system. He was in ill health at the time. Bishops’ role in shaping young minds is remarkable.

Over 800 old boys served in World War I. Sadly 112 were killed in action. Their sacrifice is remembered in the school’s roll of honour. The school itself is composed of three parts: the college for grades 8-12 the preparatory school for grades 3-7 and the pre-preparatory school for grades N-2. The main campus is on Campground Road. The eight houses Founders School and White are boarding houses. Birt Gray Kidd Mallett and Ogilvie are for day scholars. Each house accommodates approximately 70 to 100 students.

Bishops is consistently ranked among the top schools in South Africa. It’s known for its rigorous academics. It’s also one of only four schools globally to offer an annual Rhodes Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship allows former students to study at the University of Oxford. Bishops shares this scholarship with Herschel School St Cyprian’s School and LEAP Schools.

Music is a vital part of the school’s culture. Daily chapel services and an annual Eisteddfod foster musical interest. The John Peake Music School houses classrooms teaching rooms a concert hall and a recording studio. But Bishops’ history isn’t without controversy. There have been incidents of bullying hazing and allegations of inappropriate conduct by staff. These events have prompted the school to address these issues and work towards creating a safer environment for its students.

Diocesan College Bishops is more than just a school. It’s a living testament to its founders’ vision. It’s a place where history tradition and innovation come together. It’s a school that has produced countless notable alumni. These alumni have gone on to make significant contributions to various fields. They demonstrate the enduring impact of a great education.
