Stuttgart’s history whispers on the wind here at Die Wasserfänger. The very name “Stuttgart” has an interesting origin story. It began as a stud farm around 950 AD. Duke Liudolf von Schwaben needed a place to breed his cavalry horses. The area was then known as “Stutengarten”. This is an old version of the German word “Gestüt”. “Gestüt” means stud yard. Stuttgart got its name from this horse-breeding past.

Look closely. You will see the city’s coat of arms. It features a black stallion. The black stallion is even featured on the Porsche logo.

Stuttgart grew from its humble beginnings. It became the capital of the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1805. Grand buildings were constructed, like the State Gallery. Stuttgart became a center of industry in the 19th century. The railway brought opportunities for growth. Inventors like Bosch and Daimler shaped the city. Daimler actually invented the car in his Cannstatt workshop. Stuttgart earned the nickname “Cradle of the Automobile.”

Like much of Germany, Stuttgart suffered greatly during World War II. Allied air raids destroyed most of the city’s buildings. The old part of Stuttgart was badly damaged in 1944. But the city has rebuilt itself.

Die Wasserfänger stands as a testament to Stuttgart’s resilience. The people of Stuttgart are strong. This place has seen the rise and fall of empires. Stuttgart has transformed from a stud farm to a modern metropolis. Today, Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg. It is also the sixth-largest city in Germany. As you move on, remember the story of Stuttgart. Remember the stud farm. Remember the cars. Remember the rebuilding. Die Wasserfänger stands as a monument to a city that continues to create its future.
