This church wasn’t always here. The original congregation was established much earlier in 1845. It was then known as Hall’s Chapel. It was located on Ormand Street. Imagine the Frostburg of that time a much smaller town. The congregation consisted mainly of freed slaves. One of their early preachers Jeffrey Golden was also a freed slave. Another Pastor Reverend Thomas W Henry was forced to flee because of his ties to John Brown the famous abolitionist.

In 1881 the church underwent a significant change. Its name was changed to Dickerson African Methodist Episcopal Church. This was after the thirteenth Bishop of AME churches. The church also moved to its current location. The land was donated by Mr Thomas Mitchel Sr. The cost of the new building including the pulpit and pews was just $800.

The church continued to serve its community. It faced challenges especially during times of segregation. The congregation persevered despite the hardships. Think about the strength and faith it took to maintain the church. The church was a cornerstone in the community. It was a safe haven for African Americans.

Over the years the church underwent renovations in 1924 1952 and 1999. The 1999 renovation was particularly noteworthy. For the first time in its history Dickerson AME Church got indoor restrooms. Before that church members used facilities in a nearby member’s home.

Today Dickerson United Methodist Church continues to be a vital part of its community. It serves as a place of worship and a center for fellowship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of its congregation. It’s a place of hope optimism and service. It’s a reminder of the past and a beacon for the future.
