Sculpted in bronze, Diana med hind graces Diplomatstaden in Stockholm. This captivating artwork depicts the Roman goddess Diana, not in her typical hunting pose, but in a moment of rest. Diana med hind is a copy of a 16th-century original by Jean Goujon. The original was a gift from King Henry II of France to his mistress, Diane de Poitiers. This original masterpiece was later moved to the Louvre Museum but vanished during World War II. The Stockholm Diana med hind was created in the 1950s by Bergman’s foundry, based on a marble replica found in the Vatican. Interestingly, another bronze copy resides in Rottneros Park, showcasing the enduring appeal of Goujon’s design. Stockholmers were so enamored with the Diana sculpture that they sought to acquire their own. Thanks to a generous donation by Axel Hirsch, this beautiful replica now graces Diplomatstaden, allowing visitors to admire the artistry and history it embodies. The sculpture features the goddess with a deer and two dogs. The gilt details add a touch of opulence to the bronze, enhancing the overall elegance of the piece. While the original is sadly lost, the Diana med hind in Stockholm stands as a testament to its artistic merit and the enduring power of art to transcend time and circumstance.
