Once part of São Bernardo do Campo now stands Diadema a city forged in industry and striving for a better future. Diadema emerged as its own city in 1959. It’s located a mere 17 km from São Paulo’s heart.

Diadema’s story is one of transformation. From humble beginnings to a bustling urban center Diadema has seen it all. Initially, it consisted of four neighborhoods. These were Piraporinha, Eldorado, Taboão and Vila Conceição.

Imagine Diadema in the early 18th century. Connecting roads were crucial. They linked Vila de São Vicente on the coast to Vila de São Paulo de Piratininga on the plateau. These roads, now known as Antonio Piranga and Piraporinha avenues, paved the way for early inhabitants.

Until the 1940s, Diadema’s neighborhoods remained somewhat isolated. Each had its own distinct character. Piraporinha leaned towards São Bernardo. Taboão connected to both São Bernardo and São Paulo via Água Funda Avenue. Eldorado, thanks to the Billings Reservoir, had closer ties to São Paulo’s Santo Amaro region. Vila Conceição was defined by its farms, once owned by the Vila Conceição Company.

Progress arrived with Antônio Piranga’s steam-powered sawmill around 1900. This sawmill operated for two decades. It fueled the furniture-making industry in São Bernardo do Campo. The old cattle route, Estrada da Vila Conceição, gradually industrialized and urbanized.

Today, Diadema has a population of over 393,000 people. The city covers 30.73 square kilometers. Its population density is among the highest in Brazil. The annual mean temperature hovers around 19.6 °C.

Diadema has transformed from an industrial hub to a service-oriented city. Healthcare is a major sector with 77 facilities. You can explore the city’s butterfly zoo, botanical garden, art museum and even an observatory.

Diadema faced rapid urbanization and industrial growth coupled with rising poverty. Slums expanded and environmental degradation increased. However, Diadema embraced autonomy. The city management increased democratic content and citizen access.

The municipality implemented a new Master Plan for urban development. They took municipal control of health and sanitation services. Environmental preservation policies and innovative city financing emerged.

Diadema prioritizes the democratic content of land access and urban services. They are guided by the principle of participation from all agents. They consider both the legal and illegal aspects of the city.

Diadema’s story reflects a commitment to improving the lives of its residents. The city faced challenges head-on. They created sustainable solutions and fostered a sense of community.

Diadema stands as a testament to resilience and progress. It is a city constantly evolving and striving for a brighter future.
