Perhaps it all started with a vision. The Igreja Pentecostal Deus é Amor emerged in Sáo Paulo. This happened on June 3 1962. David Martins de Miranda founded it. He claimed the date and name came to him via the Holy Spirit.
Now standing before Deus é Amor, consider its humble start. It began with just three members. These were David his mother Anália Miranda and his sister Araci Miranda. Over the years thousands of churches opened across continents. They totaled over 22000.
After David Miranda’s death in 2015 his wife Ereni de Oliveira Miranda took over. She became the president.
The spread of the IPDA mirrors Brazil’s economic shifts. Economic regression urbanization and informal settlements encouraged it. This was especially so since the 1950s. The IPDA gained many followers then. Promises of miracles resonated with the poorest. They sought freedom from their situations.
By 1995 Deus é Amor had expanded to 30 countries. Its membership reached 800000 by 2001. In 2003 it had 8140 churches. The Temple of the Glory of God opened in Sáo Paulo in 2004. It could seat 60000 people.
Deus é Amor adheres to Pentecostal beliefs. Its doctrine aligns with Finished Work Pentecostalism. The church emphasizes faith healing and deliverance ministry. Laying on of hands and anointing the sick are important. Baptism with the Holy Spirit is too. Signs wonders and evangelism are also key.
The church operates radio stations. They broadcast church programs. Live healing and deliverance services also air. Deus é Amor maintains a fundamentalist Christian ideology. It separates itself from society more than other Brazilian Pentecostal churches.
Initially the IPDA enforced strict rules. Members needed faith cards. These cards had to be stamped daily. This proved attendance at worship and payment to the church.
However in 2024 the church faced controversy. It prohibited certain accessories and clothing. The church justified this by citing biblical principles. A ban on Afro hairstyles sparked outrage. Critics accused the church of racism. The church claimed the measures aimed to combat sensualism. They also sought to promote holiness and modesty.
Following the controversy the church reversed its decision. It apologized stating the communication did not reflect Christian values. The IPDA reaffirmed its opposition to discrimination. It also launched an investigation into the incident.
Today Deus é Amor continues to evolve. It adapts to modern times while holding onto core beliefs. The church uses the internet. It streams services and programs worldwide via its website and social media.
The legacy of Deus é Amor is complex. It involves faith controversy and adaptation. The church has touched many lives. It offers spiritual guidance to over a million members across 88 countries. It stands as a testament to Pentecostalism’s growth in Brazil and beyond. The church continues to spread its message.
