Stepping into the vibrant tapestry of São Paulo, one encounters a beacon of faith, the Igreja Pentecostal Deus é Amor. Founded on June 3, 1962, by David Martins de Miranda, Deus é Amor emerged from humble beginnings. Miranda claimed the date and name were divinely revealed to him. Starting with just three members, Miranda, his mother Anália, and his sister Araci, the church quickly blossomed. Deus é Amor’s growth was fueled by Miranda’s fervent evangelism. He preached in the streets and squares, his voice amplified by a cornet strapped to his bicycle. He was often accompanied by his sister. His dedication led to the establishment of numerous churches across continents. Today, Deus é Amor boasts over 17,000 temples in Brazil and a presence in 88 countries worldwide, with a membership exceeding one million. At the heart of São Paulo stands the Temple of the Glory of God, the world headquarters of Deus é Amor. This colossal structure, spanning 65,000 square meters, can accommodate up to 60,000 people, 500 cars, and 140 buses. Deus é Amor’s doctrine centers on Pentecostal beliefs, emphasizing faith healing, deliverance ministry, and evangelism. The church utilizes various media platforms, including radio and the internet, to broadcast its message of faith and healing. The “Voice of Liberation” program has been a cornerstone of their outreach for over 50 years. Despite its widespread influence, Deus é Amor has faced controversies. Accusations of strict control mechanisms, including “faith cards” to monitor attendance and contributions, have been raised. Additionally, the church has been linked to money laundering allegations, further adding to its complex narrative.
