In 1917 a salesman for Standard Oil became pastor. This was Reverend William B Waters. He’d found faith in 1915. He was a key figure in Derwood Bible Church’s early years. The church began as The Derwood ME Church South. It was incorporated on July 24 1919. The original building was replaced. Faith Chapel was a small white wooden structure. It still stands near the current Derwood Bible Church offices. The church became independent in 1942. Grace Methodist Church sold it for just one dollar. Reverend Waters had a second stint as pastor starting in 1928. Through the years many pastors served Derwood Bible Church. These included Reverend Homer Heater a future president of Washington Bible College. In 1962 an annex was added. Six classrooms were built. The name changed to Derwood Bible Church in August 1962. A new main building opened in 1963. The church became elder-led in 2000. Derwood Bible Church also attempted an expansion in 2005. They purchased 225 acres in Laytonsville. This plan was later abandoned. The land was sold to Rupert Nurseries. Derwood Bible Church has a rich history. It’s a testament to faith and community. Its evolution reflects the changing times. It continues to serve its community today.
