Denkmal der Opfer des Faschismus

Amidst the urban tapestry of Vienna’s 21st district, stands the Denkmal der Opfer des Faschismus. This stone pyramid, etched with names, silently testifies to a turbulent past. The Denkmal der Opfer des Faschismus isn’t just a monument. It’s a poignant reminder of the ten individuals who bravely resisted the Nazi regime. Located on the grounds of the former Floridsdorf Locomotive Factory, the Denkmal der Opfer des Faschismus was originally dedicated on December 29, 1949. The workers’ council of the factory commissioned the monument, a testament to their fallen comrades. The original Denkmal der Opfer des Faschismus featured an obelisk topped with a burning torch, symbolizing the enduring spirit of resistance. The names of the ten resistance fighters were inscribed on the base, along with the powerful words “Nie vergessen!” or “Never forget!”. Notable figures like Gustav Wegerer, a former Buchenwald prisoner, and Rosa Jochmann, a social democratic politician and resistance fighter, participated in the unveiling ceremony. Time took its toll, and by 1988, the Denkmal der Opfer des Faschismus required extensive renovation. The monument was dismantled, altered, and re-erected. The torch and portrait medallions were removed, potentially resulting in an entirely new structure. On July 25, 1988, Vice Mayor Hans Mayr inaugurated the renovated Denkmal der Opfer des Faschismus, now designed by J. Höller. The inscription lists the names and dates of the ten individuals honored: Ferdinand Buchmann, Wilhelm Fuhry, Karl Gries, Franz Maresch, Ferdinand Oppitz, Franz Pleschkou, Johann Schicktanz, Johann Suppinger, Narziß Vavra, and Hans Weber. Their sacrifice, etched in stone, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of resistance and the enduring fight for freedom.
