Gazing upon the Denis Winston Fountain, one can almost hear the echoes of its past. The Denis Winston Fountain, originally commissioned in 1962, wasn’t always situated here. It once graced the entrance of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) building at 55 Hunter Street. The fountain’s sculptor, Tom Bass, envisioned it carved from the building’s stone wall. However, due to practical and financial constraints, copper became the material of choice. The wave-like form and flowing water paid homage to P&O’s maritime heritage. The Denis Winston Fountain quickly became a beloved landmark. Sydneysiders and office workers alike admired its elegant presence. Professor Richard Goodwin even declared it “the most significant public sculpture in the world”. When the P&O building met the wrecking ball in 2017 to make way for the Martin Place Metro Precinct, the Denis Winston Fountain was carefully salvaged. It underwent a meticulous restoration. The copper, tarnished by time, was returned to its original brilliance. The fountain’s original water jets were revived with a new pump system. Today, the Denis Winston Fountain stands proudly at its original height and orientation. The tapered line beneath it marks the slope of the former P&O building façade. This placement serves as a reminder of its past life and its enduring connection to the city’s streetscape. Tom Bass, a prominent Australian sculptor, created numerous public works. The Denis Winston Fountain stands as a testament to his artistic vision. It’s a piece of Sydney’s history, brought back to life for all to enjoy.
