How does a cliff-top outlook across the Jamison Valley sound? That is what awaits you at Den Fenella Lookout. It is a reward at the end of the Den Fenella Walking Track.
Den Fenella Lookout offers stunning views. The cliffs of Kings Tableland stretch into the distance. Almost directly ahead, Mount Solitary rises majestically. To the east, you can spot the cliffs at the start of Kings Tableland. Look closely. You might even make out Lincolns Rock lookout.
A narrow ledge just before the fenced Den Fenella Lookout provides a different perspective. It gives a unique view of the Kings Tableland escarpment. Some say the views are similar to other Wentworth Falls lookouts. But Den Fenella Lookout is special. It is one of the least crowded lookouts.
The walk to Den Fenella Lookout is pleasant. The path winds through a narrow gully. It passes the pretty Den Fenella Falls. The falls are a series of cascades. They flow over the cliffline near the lookout. Den Fenella Creek feeds these falls. The creek flows through Den Fenella Glen. The falls may have a small flow. But they are quite pretty when they do.
Getting to Den Fenella Lookout is easy. The lookout is about 1.2km return from the Wentworth Falls Picnic Area. You can find the picnic area at the end of Sir H Burrell Drive. This is about 3.2km from Wentworth Falls village and station.
Consider a longer walk. A 4-5km scenic cliff-top loop includes the lookout. Another option is the Overcliff-Undercliff Track walk which is 3.9km one-way. The Den Fenella Track itself is short. It is an easy bushwalking trail from the picnic area.
The Den Fenella Track is only 1 km return. It takes about an hour to complete. Dogs are not allowed on this track. The walk is a real treat. It features lush rainforest and creek crossings. Cascade waterfalls add to the scenery. The views are panoramic.
To reach the picnic area, turn into Falls Road from the Great Western Highway. At the end of Falls Road, turn into Sir H Burrell Drive. There is a reasonably sized car park there. It fills up quickly on weekends. Arrive early to secure a spot.
The Den Fenella Walking Track is quite steep. Especially the last 200 meters. The trail descends into a small canyon. Good hiking shoes are recommended. This is especially important in wet conditions.
Start the walk at the picnic tables behind the car park. After about 300 meters, the trail reaches a small footbridge. This is the junction with the Overcliff Undercliff Track.
Cross the footbridge. Turn left to start the 200-meter walk down to Den Fenella Lookout. This section follows Den Fenella Creek. It leads into a small canyon environment.
The creek creates several small cascade waterfalls. Stairs and stepping stones help you navigate this beautiful scenery. After crossing a few small footbridges, you will arrive at the fenced Den Fenella Lookout.
It is a small lookout point on a cliff edge. The creek drops into the valley nearby. On a clear day, the views across Jamison Valley are sensational. You may see Kings Tableland, Mount Solitary and the Narrow Neck Plateau. You may even spot Sublime Point.
Once you have soaked in the views, retrace your steps back to the car park. There, you can explore other nearby walks. Remember the Den Fenella Walking Track offers a perfect introduction to the Blue Mountains National Park. Enjoy the forests, waterfalls and breathtaking clifftop views.
