Den-en Chofu University

Founded on the principles of “shaga-shojin,” Den-en Chofu University has a rich history. Den-en Chofu University, as it stands today, wasn’t always a university. Its roots trace back to 1926, with the establishment of Chofu Girl’s School and Chofu Kindergarten in Tokyo’s Den-en Chofu area. The school’s founder, Shohei Nishimura, a former sea captain for Nippon Yusen, envisioned a place of higher learning inspired by his travels to Europe and the United States. He even took it upon himself to perform various tasks around the school, embodying the “shaga-shojin” philosophy. A sculpture commemorating his dedication still stands on the campus of Den-en Chofu University. The university’s journey from a girl’s school to a co-educational institution reflects Japan’s evolving educational landscape. In 1967, Chofu Girl’s Junior College was established in Kawasaki, marking a significant step. The institution transitioned to co-education in 1998.
