At the heart of Tel Aviv, Democracy Square pulsates with a unique energy. This isn’t just another city square. It’s a living testament to the power of the people. Originally known as the Azrieli-Kaplan Intersection, Democracy Square earned its new name in 2024. This renaming commemorates the 75th anniversary of the State of Israel and honors the thousands of protestors who gathered here for 28 weeks. They stood firm, defending the democratic values enshrined in Israel’s Declaration of Independence. Democracy Square is situated at the intersection of Eli’ezer Kaplan Street, Giv’at HaTahmoshet Street, and Menachem Begin Road. Its location, near government institutions, a military base, and the city’s main entrance, makes it a powerful symbol of the people’s voice. Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality has consistently championed the values of equality, freedom, and democracy. In December 2022, a 36-meter banner displaying the Declaration of Independence was hung on city hall. Later, in March 2023, during Democracy Week, an 80-meter sign proclaiming “Non-stop Democracy” was painted on the Shlomo Lahat Promenade. These acts underscore the city’s commitment to the very principles Democracy Square now represents. So, as you stand in Democracy Square, remember the voices that have echoed here. Remember the unwavering commitment to democratic ideals. This is more than a square; it is the heart of Israeli democracy.
