Established in 1989 Delft is a Cape Town township. It’s a place of contrasts. A vibrant community with a complex history. Delft grew rapidly becoming the fastest-growing area in Cape Town in 2022. This wasn’t always the case.

Delft’s origins lie in a planned mixed-race settlement. It aimed to integrate Coloured and Black residents. This was a significant step considering South Africa’s history of racial segregation. However the reality was far more complex. Delft faced challenges like high unemployment and crime.

The N2 Gateway housing project caused significant controversy. Shack dwellers resisted forced relocation. Violent evictions occurred. The Symphony section became a focal point of conflict. Temporary Relocation Areas like Tsunami and Symphony Way TRA arose. The area known as Blikkiesdorp became a symbol of the struggles faced by many.

Delft today remains a diverse place. Xhosa and Afrikaans are dominant languages. Delft South is predominantly Xhosa speaking. Leiden or Delft Central mixes both Xhosa and Afrikaans speakers. Other areas like Voorbrug and Eindhoven are mainly Afrikaans speaking. The community works to overcome challenges. Groups like the Enkosi Foundation and the Delft Community Development Forum strive for youth empowerment and community development.

Delft stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit. Its growth reflects both the progress and the enduring hardships of a society grappling with its past. While marked by conflict and poverty Delft also shows a strong sense of community. A place striving to build a better future. This is Delft. A Cape Town story still unfolding.
