The Church of the Nazarene is part of a large global family. It includes more than 160 countries. Around the world, there are 30000 Nazarene churches. These churches have almost 2.5 million members. The Nazarenes are part of the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. They focus on holy living.
The Church of the Nazarene’s anniversary is traced back to 1908. The West Coast Nazarenes united with the Holiness Church of Christ. This happened under Dr Bresee’s leadership in Texas.
South Africa’s Church of the Nazarene celebrated a century of faith. The celebration marked one hundred years. It took place at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit. Mpumalanga is historically important. That is because the Church began its work in South Africa there.
Guests came from Swaziland Mozambique and Lesotho. General Superintendent Carla Sunberg attended. Regional Director Dany Gomis was also there. Field Strategy Coordinator Musa Kunene joined too. Deputy Minister for Basic Education was present. Pastors and local congregations all participated.
Speeches covered the church’s history. Dr Litswele and Dr Khoza spoke about the early days. They shared memories of the first missionaries. They remembered the first national pastors.
Dr Sunberg apologized for the pain of the apartheid era. She acknowledged the missionaries’ role in racial discrimination. Dawie De Koker also apologized for the pain caused. He is the NMI president for Africa. A call was made to reconcile the Church in South Africa.
