“Is that where the land used to be?” a young boy asked, pointing towards the vast expanse of Wellington Harbour. You’re standing at Deepwater Point, a location that holds a silent testament to Wellington’s remarkable transformation. Deepwater Point, despite its name, isn’t a point jutting out into the sea anymore. It’s a marker, a memory, a plaque set within the railway shunting yards south of Davis Street and Thorndon Quay. Imagine standing here in the early 1800s. Instead of these bustling train tracks, you would have seen the waves lapping at the actual Deepwater Point. Wellington, then a fledgling settlement, was cramped, with just over a thousand town-acre lots. The hills pressed close, leaving little room for public spaces or easy access to the harbor. The need for more land was obvious. So what did they do? They started pushing back the sea. Bit by bit, year by year, they reclaimed land from the harbor. The spoil from the hills behind Lambton Quay and Wadestown Hill was used to fill the sea. By the end of the 1870s, around 70 acres had been added, creating a new shoreline running almost straight from Willis Street to Pipitea Point, the original Deepwater Point. Deepwater Point stands as a silent reminder of Wellington’s ingenuity. It tells a story of how a city, pressed for space, boldly reshaped its own landscape, turning its limitations into opportunities.
