Have you sensed the ancient whispers carried on the breeze around Deeh Baba Temple? Here at Deeh Baba Temple, we stand at a place of deep local significance. It is more than just a temple. It is a testament to faith and tradition.

Deeh Baba, as the ancestral god, watches over the villages of Varanasi. He is seen as a protector and provider. This is a role deeply embedded in the local culture. Each village has its own Dih Baba, each a unique guardian.

During the dark days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Deeh Baba’s importance surged. Villagers, facing a failing healthcare system, turned to their ancestral gods. They believed the pandemic was a result of the gods’ anger. The only way to ensure safety was to appease them.

Across Varanasi, villagers conducted 21-day pujas. These prayers and offerings happened twice daily. Women predominantly led these rituals. The culmination was a “kadhai,” a ritual meal offered to the gods. The belief was simple: worship Dih Baba and Sheetala Mata, and the disease would flee.

The rituals were not new. They mirrored existing practices surrounding health goddesses and protector gods. Sheetala Mata, often invoked during epidemics, is depicted with a broom and a jar of medicinal water. This symbolizes her power to ward off disease.

Offerings called “dhaar” were common. These were mixtures of water, neem, or milk. They were given during times of ill-luck or epidemics. The myths surrounding Dih Baba varied from village to village. Some believed in nine goddesses, sisters with the youngest being Dulara Devi who held great anger.

The surge in faith during the pandemic highlighted a deep-seated belief. Villagers felt helpless. They saw ancestral gods as their last resort. They believed a bad omen had fallen upon them. Pujas were a way to ward off this omen. They lit incense, offered flowers, and prayed for deliverance.

Deeh Baba temples became focal points. Even at the Kashi Vishwanath temple, women performed pujas seeking divine intervention. The belief in the power of Dih Baba strengthened as some villages saw deaths decline. People felt that the virus could not enter their houses or villages without Dih Baba’s will.

Today, Deeh Baba Temple stands as a reminder of that faith. It showcases the enduring power of local traditions. It is a story etched in the hearts of the people of Varanasi. Here, faith and hope intertwine. They offer solace in the face of adversity. Take a moment to reflect on the unwavering spirit of the community. They found strength in their ancestral roots, right here at Deeh Baba Temple.
