What if I told you about a warrior god, a sacred stone, and a prophecy? Here, on the slopes of Thimphu valley, stands Dechenphu Lhakhang, a monastery intertwined with this very legend. Founded in the 12th century, Dechenphu Lhakhang wasn’t always the tranquil haven it appears today. It stands on land once associated with Geynyen, a powerful warrior god. The Gönkhang, a fortified tower at the heart of Dechenphu Lhakhang, whispers tales of this god’s might. Legend has it that Geynyen, also known as Jagpa Melen, meaning “Fire Fetching Brigand and Supreme Warlord,” was a force to be reckoned with. Kuenga Sangay, a revered figure, had to subdue this spirit, transforming him into the monastery’s protector. This wasn’t the end of Geynyen. His spirit retreated into a large stone, forever known as the Thimphu, meaning ‘Disappeared into the Stone’. It is within this very stone that the prophecy sleeps – a promise that when Bhutan faces its darkest hour, Geynyen will rise again, emerging from the Thimphu to defend his land. Today, Dechenphu Lhakhang stands as a testament to Bhutan’s rich spiritual history, its weathered stones echoing with tales of gods, prophecies, and the enduring faith of its people.
