Here, before us, stands the Debsi Chorten, a magnificent testament to the enduring spirit of Bhutanese Buddhism. The Debsi Chorten, often called the Memorial Chorten, isn’t just a stunning example of traditional architecture, with its gleaming white walls and golden spire. It was built in 1974, a symbol of respect and love for the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. He was a visionary leader who modernized Bhutan, but he also yearned for a chorten that would embody the very essence of the Buddha’s teachings. Interestingly, the Debsi Chorten houses no physical remains. Instead, it is the king’s vision, his spirit, that is honored here. As you walk clockwise around the chorten, spinning the prayer wheels and listening to the murmured prayers of the elderly, you’ll feel a profound sense of peace. That peace, that connection to something greater, is the true legacy of the third king and his Debsi Chorten.
