Right here at Deakin Park, we find a place revitalized by community and thoughtful design. Deakin Park is located north of the M4, along Silverwater Road. It is owned by the City of Parramatta Council.
Once simply a stormwater channel draining from the M4 to the Duck River, Deakin Park has undergone a transformation. This transformation aimed to improve water quality and natural habitat. The park’s enhancements reflect a commitment to both environmental sustainability and community needs.
In 2021, the community shared its ideas for upgrading Deakin Park. This feedback shaped the draft Landscape Plan. Residents expressed strong support for environmental initiatives. They also wanted more shade, seating, and improved dog facilities.
The Landscape Plan includes several key features. The concrete stormwater channel has been replaced with gently sloping banks. These banks are stabilized with native plants and rocks. New vegetation and a wetland were designed to improve water quality. These filter and cleanse the water naturally.
These changes also help create a balanced ecosystem. This manages the mosquito population effectively. A lookout point, boardwalk, and pedestrian paths now invite visitors. Seating areas provide places to relax and enjoy the natural setting.
The existing playground has been retained. Additional trees and plants encourage wildlife and provide shade. A grassed mound towards Silverwater Road acts as a sound buffer. This reduces noise impacts.
Dog owners will appreciate the improved dog park facilities. These include a double gate, drinking fountain, and dog bowl. The dog fence was even relocated closer to Beaconsfield Road. This offsets space used for wetland filtration.
Deakin Park also features a large, fenced dog area. This off-leash area includes obstacles. These obstacles provide a fun challenge for furry friends.
For children, a brand-new playground opened in July 2020. It includes a scooter track, a bird’s nest swing, and musical instruments. A climbing frame and slide add to the fun. The playground enjoys natural shade from surrounding trees.
Deakin Park is easily accessible from Beaconsfield Street. Street parking is available. Nearby attractions include Auburn Redyard, Bunnings Lidcombe, and Sydney Olympic Park.
Deakin Park represents a successful collaboration. Sydney Water and the City of Parramatta Council worked together. They improved water quality and enhanced the park for the community. This park offers something for everyone. It is a place where people and their furry friends can connect with nature.
