Green grass welcomes you to David Farrington Park. This isn’t just any park. It’s a place steeped in history and sporting glory. David Farrington Park was once Centennial Park. It hosted a motor camp during the 1940 Centennial Exhibition. Later it provided temporary housing for New Zealand immigrants.
David Farrington Park is more than a simple field. It’s the home ground of Team Wellington and Miramar Rangers AFC. These teams have played countless matches here. The park even hosted its first OFC Champions League game in 2017. Team Wellington beat AS Magenta 7-1 securing a place in the final.
The park’s transformation is a fascinating tale. In 2012 it underwent significant renovations. The playing surface was riddled with organic matter and contaminants. Waterlogged and unplayable it needed urgent attention. Mexted Performance Sport Surfaces removed 100mm of the top layer. They then re-leveled the base and installed new drainage. A fresh layer of turf sand and creeping rye grass was added improving the ground significantly. Some of the excavated sand was even recycled at Houghton Bay Park a former landfill.
The ground itself is typical of New Zealand stadiums. There’s a grandstand for about 600 spectators. There is also a small hill in the north-west corner. The remaining space provides room for thousands more. Miramar School is at the south end. The clubhouse sits comfortably at the north end. This park holds a capacity of 2000 people.
David Farrington Park’s name is a tribute. It honors a local football legend David Farrington. He passed away in 2008. His dedication to the sport spanned over 40 years. He coached Miramar Rangers Wellington representative teams and even the New Zealand women’s national side. A fitting tribute indeed. The park’s legacy continues to grow. It serves as a vibrant hub for the community. A place where sportsmanship thrives and history echoes in every touch of the ball.
