Did Toronto’s former mayor, David Crombie, ever imagine a park named after him would become a green artery in the city’s heart? David Crombie Park isn’t just a patch of green. It’s the backbone of the St. Lawrence neighbourhood, a vibrant community praised as a “gold standard for mixed development”. It’s not typically a tourist hot spot, but residents cherish this park. Visitors often use it as a walkway between the bustling downtown core and the lively Distillery District. David Crombie, the park’s namesake, served three terms as Toronto’s mayor. He played a crucial role in revitalizing the St. Lawrence area, emphasizing its human scale and liveability. His vision, alongside his colleagues’, created a neighbourhood hailed as “the best example of a mixed-income, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly, sensitively scaled, densely populated community ever built in the province.” Originally designed in the early 1970s, the park stretches over five city blocks, nearly half a mile. It serves as both a vital civic connector and a beloved local green space. In recent years, David Crombie Park underwent a significant revitalization. The Planning Partnership spearheaded this multi-disciplinary project, incorporating extensive community input. The plan preserved the park’s historic charm while adding new amenities and enhancing its overall quality. Construction began in 2022, backed by a $13 million commitment from the city. The revitalization project, led by SLA and Arcadis, further transformed the park. It integrated Indigenous placekeeping elements designed by Taw Architects, including a designated space for sacred fires and Seven Sacred Teachings boulders in the children’s playground. The project aimed for carbon neutrality within 15 years of completion, emphasizing sustainability alongside community needs. This revitalization preserved much of the park’s original structure, retaining concrete walls, trees, and sports courts. New wooden seating, benches, and platforms were added, blending seamlessly with the existing elements. Natural planting and landscape zones were introduced, creating biodiverse habitats for both people and local wildlife. The redesign also strengthened the park’s main promenade, improved cycling infrastructure, and enhanced connections to the surrounding neighbourhood, including the Distillery District and St. Lawrence Market. David Crombie Park today stands as a testament to thoughtful urban planning and community engagement. It represents a vibrant blend of history, nature, and human connection in the heart of Toronto.
