Picture this a centuries-old trail winding through Toronto’s landscape. This path the Davenport Road was once trod by First Nations peoples. It connected the Humber and Don Rivers a vital artery in the land before Toronto existed.

Today we stand at the heart of Davenport a neighbourhood that owes its name to this very road and a remarkable story. It all started with Ensign John McGill a settler who arrived in 1797. He built a home and named it Davenport after a fellow officer Major Davenport. The name itself is Norman French meaning “the town on the trickling stream” a fitting description for this area’s early days.

This wasn’t just any house. It was the first ever built atop the steep escarpment the ancient Lake Iroquois shoreline. Imagine the effort required to build a home in this challenging terrain. The house stood proudly overlooking the land. It became a landmark. Its view was simply magnificent. The McGills home provided the neighbourhood’s name.

Later the Northern Railway arrived in 1861 changing Davenport forever. A rail line was built south of Davenport Road. A station was built. A village named Davenport sprang up. It thrived. It even merged with Carleton Village and West Toronto Junction to form Toronto Junction in 1889. Finally in 1909 it was annexed by the city of Toronto itself.

The railway brought industry and attracted workers many of whom were Italian Canadians. This shaped Davenport’s character. By the 1950s Italian Canadians dominated the neighbourhood. The presence of the railway also led to the industrialization of the area. Many small plants and factories were set up. Today Davenport retains its rich Italian heritage although many factories are gone. New townhouses now stand where factories once operated.

But the history of Davenport isn’t just about industry. It’s about resilience and preservation. Did you know there’s a Tollkeeper’s Cottage here? Built around 1830 this is believed to be the only surviving early tollhouse in Canada. It once stood along Davenport Road. It was eventually moved to its current location. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Davenport. It serves as a reminder of the rich past of this remarkable neighbourhood. A neighbourhood built on a trail. A neighbourhood shaped by industry. A neighbourhood preserving its history. This is Davenport a neighborhood with a story to tell.
