Is this a mirage, or are there two bridges? You’re not imagining things. You’re standing before Danviksbron, not one bridge but two! Well, sort of. Danviksbron has a fascinating history that’s left its mark, quite literally, in the form of two interconnected structures spanning the waters of Stockholm. This iconic bridge, a testament to the city’s growth and evolving architectural prowess, links the vibrant island of Södermalm to the bustling municipality of Nacka. The first bridge took its place in 1922, a sturdy single-leaf bascule design with a distinct concrete counterweight. This bridge gracefully carried both the railway, Saltsjöbanan, and the ever-increasing road traffic. As Stockholm thrived in the postwar years, a new challenge arose: traffic congestion. The solution? Adding a second bridge! This time, a wider, more modern structure was erected just south of the original bridge in 1956. So, while technically two bridges, they work in perfect harmony, a visual reminder of Danviksbron’s enduring strength and adaptability.
