Founded in 1974 the Dante Alighieri Academy stands proudly in Toronto. It’s a testament to the Italian-Canadian community’s rich heritage. Initially housed in temporary structures the academy welcomed 180 students and nine teachers. Imagine the energy in those small spaces. The permanent building a three-story structure arose in 1976. An addition followed in 1979.

The Dante Alighieri Academy wasn’t just a school. It was a gathering place. A hub for the vibrant Italian-Canadian community. The school’s name honours Dante Alighieri a legendary Italian poet. His influence resonates within the academy’s walls. It serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Italian culture.

Growth led to challenges. Overcrowding forced the relocation of grade 9 students. They temporarily attended Bathurst Heights Secondary School from 2006 to 2011. Later the students moved to the old Sir Sanford Fleming Academy. This campus became known as Beatrice Campus a nod to Beatrice Portinari a figure from Dante’s life.

In 2011 the Toronto Catholic District Board secured funding for renovations. A joint venture with Villa Charities aimed to create a modern facility. This ambitious plan however faced community opposition. It involved the potential demolition of the Columbus Centre. The province ultimately rejected the plan. The partnership dissolved.

Today the academy continues to thrive. It offers diverse programs including arts technology and a Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. Notable alumni include actress Malin Akerman music producer DerHova and athlete Richie Laryea. The Dante Alighieri Academy remains a vital part of the Toronto landscape. It’s a place where education cultural pride and community spirit intertwine. The academy’s story is a journey of growth adaptation and unwavering dedication to its students and the community.
