Built in 1782, Danshui Fuyou Temple is a beautiful, low-lying structure. It is the oldest temple in Tamsui. The Danshui Fuyou Temple is dedicated to Matsu, the Goddess of the Sea. This makes perfect sense. For centuries, the lives of the Tamsui people revolved around the sea.

Danshui Fuyou Temple is more than just a place of worship. It is a living testament to the history and cultural heritage of Tamsui. As you stand before its hallowed halls, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details. The roof truss over the altar features a curious motif: “the fool holding up the sky.” Inside, you will discover a treasure trove of artwork and sculptures. These date back to the late eighteenth century, a period of exquisite Chinese architecture.

One particular artifact stands out: a plaque in the main hall inscribed with the words “glorious miracles and manifest blessings.” Legend has it that this plaque was a gift from Emperor Guangxu himself. It is said that Matsu, the goddess to whom this temple is dedicated, displayed her divine power during the Sino-French War, prompting the emperor to bestow this honor upon the temple.

The Danshui Fuyou Temple is a place of peace. But it is also a place of vibrant energy, where the echoes of ancient prayers mingle with the hopes and dreams of modern-day worshippers. As you leave Danshui Fuyou Temple, take with you the spirit of the seafaring people who built it. May their resilience inspire you!
