Imagine stumbling upon a hidden world. This world exists just 15 minutes from Sydney’s CBD. That world is Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve.

Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve offers a refreshing escape. It is a refuge from the city’s hustle and bustle. This 10.768-hectare reserve lies in St Ives. It stands as one of the last great blue gum forests.

Richard Dalrymple-Hay championed the preservation of this forest in the 1920s. He was the first Commissioner for forests. He acquired this land for a demonstration forest. It was not large enough to log economically. So, it was left untouched. Now, it is preserved for future generations.

Before that, the Kuringgai people hunted here. This area was part of their traditional lands. Their Country stretched to Broken Bay. This fertile bushland supported grazing animals. Wallabies were an important source of food.

Today, Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve is more than just pretty trees. It is a living museum. The reserve showcases over 180 native plant species. Towering blackbutt trees dominate the skyline. Some reach over 40 meters tall. Sydney blue gum, grey ironbark and turpentine also thrive here. Smaller plants like false bracken add to the diversity.

Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife. Ringtail possums and sugar gliders are common. Brushtail possums and grey-headed flying foxes also live here. Keep an eye out for wallabies. You might spot one. Birdwatchers flock here, especially early in the morning. Rainbow lorikeets and Australian king parrots fill the air with song. Crimson rosellas and superb fairy wrens also call this place home.

This natural bushland has remained largely untouched since colonisation. As such, nocturnal species such as possums, sugar gliders as well as both powerful and boobook owls feel very comfortable.

The reserve is also a center for bush regeneration. Invasive weeds pose a constant threat. Privet, lantana and camphor laurel are troublesome. Dedicated teams work to protect the native flora. Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve is a showpiece. It demonstrates best practices in bush care.

Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve is open from sunrise to sunset. Sometimes it closes due to poor weather. The Browns Forest loop trail is an easy walk. It offers excellent birdwatching. It is great for kids.

So, take a deep breath. Listen to the rustling leaves. Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve invites you. Experience nature’s tranquility. Appreciate its delicate balance. Remember its history.
