Have you ever heard of a statue so powerful, so sacred, that it was said to bring good fortune to all who touched it? Right here, in front of you, stands the Dagon Daing, one of the most revered statues in Mandalay. Dagon Daing is no ordinary statue. In fact, it is believed to be the oldest surviving statue in the entire city. It was built in the 18th century, during the reign of the Konbaung Dynasty, and to this day, people come from all over to make offerings and seek blessings from its divine presence. There’s a long-standing tradition surrounding Dagon Daing. Back in the old days, before cars and motorcycles, people would bring their offerings to the statue on elephant back. Imagine the sight, hundreds of majestic elephants carrying their burdens of flowers, incense, and offerings towards the Dagon Daing! They believed that by making offerings and touching the statue, they would be blessed with good luck, prosperity, and protection from harm. The Dagon Daing is not just a statue, it is a symbol of the enduring faith and spiritual strength of a people, a reminder of a time when elephants roamed the streets and the world felt a little bit more magical.
