What if the walls of Dachswaldkirche could talk? They might tell a tale of shifting landscapes and changing fortunes. Today we stand before the Dachswaldkirche. It is a place that holds memories both joyful and bittersweet for the Thomasgemeinde.
For years, this church served as a spiritual anchor. It was a place where community bonds were strengthened. But times change. The Evangelische Landeskirche in Württemberg faced dwindling membership and resources. They had to make tough choices.
The Dachswaldkirche along with the Waldheim Sonnenwinkel and the Jugendhäusle were deemed dispensable. The church’s physical condition worsened over time. The roof began to leak. A summer storm damaged a distributor box causing a fire hazard. The Dachswaldkirche had to be temporarily closed.
Repairs would cost at least 75,000 Euro. Further investment seemed unwise. The Evangelische Gesamtkirchengemeinde Stuttgart planned a project with the Evangelische Heimstiftung here. They decided against investing in buildings slated for closure.
The Thomasgemeinde’s Kirchengemeinderat received this news with heavy hearts. They knew the Dachswaldkirche’s time was limited. This abrupt end still caused pain. A farewell service was held on February 2, 2025. Dekan Søren Schwesig led the congregation. People gathered to pray one last time in their beloved church. They shared personal memories.
In the days leading up to the service, four candlelit devotions took place. Former pastors and the “Heavenly Views” team led prayers. Each devotion focused on a different theme. People reflected and gave thanks. The candlelight added depth because there was no electricity in the church.
During the service, the cross, Bible, and candle were carried to the Jugendhäusle. This is where future services would be held. The farewell ended with a Kirchcafé. People shared memories of their time at the Dachswaldkirche.
Even without the Dachswaldkirche, the community persevered. The Jugendhäusle continues to host services. In warmer months, open-air gatherings are planned. Discussions are underway to continue the kindergarten at Waldheim Heslach.
So while the Dachswaldkirche no longer hosts regular services, its spirit endures. It lives on in the community’s gatherings and memories. It remains a testament to faith and resilience in the face of change.
