In the late 19th century, Leopold Daab acquired several plots along Czynszowa Street. His family eventually owned the entire side of the street. Czynszowa Street itself had a curious beginning. It was laid out in 1865 as part of the development of Nowa Praga by Ksawery Konopacki. The street’s name, Czynszowa, hints at its purpose. It was intended for tenement houses, built to generate income for their owners. Around 1890, Leopold Daab constructed three tenement houses at the intersection of Czynszowa and Stalowa Streets. Other tenement buildings, belonging to different owners, appeared later in the 20th century. Czynszowa Street played a role in Warsaw’s expanding public transport system. Around 1910, an electric tram line was installed along Stalowa and Czynszowa Streets. Today, the southern part of Czynszowa serves as a tram terminus. Trams enter from Wileńska Street, then begin their new route towards Stalowa Street. Remarkably, the buildings along Czynszowa Street survived World War II. They stand as a testament to the resilience of Warsaw’s architecture and the enduring spirit of its people.
