Established in 1707 the Czech Technical University in Prague boasts a rich history. It’s one of Central Europe’s oldest technological institutions. Initially a school for engineering it was a response to a petition. Christian Josef Willenberg wanted to teach engineering arts. Emperor Joseph I approved. The school started small. Just twelve students. Six barons four knights and two burghers.

Initially the focus was military. Classes were short. One hour a day in the first year. Almost two in the second. Over time however the student body grew. By 1779 there were approximately 200 students. The curriculum broadened to include civil engineering and other fields.

The Czech Technical University in Prague wasn’t always a university. It began as the Institute of Engineering Education. This secondary school eventually transformed into the Prague Polytechnical Institute in 1806. This change reflected a Europe-wide trend. Polytechnical universities were becoming popular. They followed the model of the French Ecole Polytechnique.

After the Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved the school’s name changed. In 1920 it officially became the Czech Technical University in Prague. The university faced significant challenges throughout its history. During the Nazi occupation it was closed. This closure occurred in 1939 after student protests. The German Technical University however continued operating under the Third Reich. After the war the German university closed. The Czech Technical University reopened as the sole successor of this long and complex history.

Today the Czech Technical University in Prague is a major university. It has eight faculties. The oldest is the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The newest is the Faculty of Information Technology. This faculty is also the most selective. The university fosters innovation and international collaboration. It has agreements with hundreds of universities worldwide. It’s home to numerous student teams. These teams work on projects like building electric formula racing cars and designing space rovers.
