Hidden away on the western shores of Pittwater, Currawong Beach whispers tales of simpler times. Currawong Beach isn’t just a beach. It’s a time capsule, preserving a unique slice of Australian history. Imagine stepping off the ferry, leaving the hustle and bustle of Sydney behind, and finding yourself in a world where time seems to slow down. Currawong Beach, originally known as Little Mackerel Beach, first welcomed settlers in 1823 when John Clarke, a veteran of the NSW Military, made it his home. The land changed hands a few times, becoming “Wilson’s Beach” under the Wilson family’s ownership from 1871 to 1908. Then came Dr. Bernard Tarlton Stiles and his family, who built “Africa,” later renamed “Midholme,” a house that still stands today. But Currawong Beach’s story took a dramatic turn in 1949. The Labor Council of New South Wales acquired the land, transforming it into a holiday haven for workers. This was a time of significant social change in Australia, with the introduction of the 40-hour work week and two weeks of paid annual leave. Currawong Beach became a symbol of these reforms, a place where workers could escape the city and enjoy the natural beauty of Pittwater. The camp quickly expanded, with eight cabins built between 1949 and 1952, followed by more “Vandyke” style cabins. These simple fibro cottages, some built with donated materials and volunteer labor, became iconic representations of the era. Currawong Beach wasn’t about luxury. It was about community, affordable holidays, and the joy of simple pleasures. Children played spotlight under the stars, families gathered for sing-alongs, and the sounds of laughter echoed through the trees. The beach, nestled beside Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, offered a tranquil escape. The fight to preserve Currawong Beach has been a long one. There were attempts to redevelop the site, even proposals for a luxury resort. But the community rallied, determined to protect this special place. Today, Currawong Beach is a State Park, a testament to the enduring value of its history and natural beauty. The restored cottages, the sandy beach, the surrounding bushland – they all whisper stories of the past, inviting you to step back in time and experience the magic of Currawong Beach.
