Picture the scene. Rolling hills dotted with grazing sheep. This is Currans Hill. Not quite the battleground of Tobruk but almost.

Currans Hill a suburb of Sydney boasts a rich history. Originally home to the Muringong people a sub-clan of the Darug. John Macarthur’s merino sheep grazed these very lands in 1805. His Camden property wasn’t far.

But Currans Hill’s story takes a fascinating turn. In 1944 filmmaker Charles Chauvel transformed this rural landscape. He needed a location for his movie The Rats of Tobruk. He recreated the bombing of Tobruk right here. Local residents even helped build the sets. Can you imagine the bustling activity? The sounds of construction echoing across the tranquil hills?

That movie set was later replaced by a drive-in cinema. A very different kind of spectacle. Currans Hill transformed again. From a farming community to a residential suburb in the 1990s.

Today Currans Hill is a thriving community. It has a recreational lake. There are reserves connected by cycleways and walking paths. A primary school stands proudly. A community hall welcomes residents. Even a corner store provides everyday necessities. A Christian high school and church are also part of the landscape.

Think of it. From ancient Aboriginal lands to a wartime film set. Then a drive-in. Finally a modern suburb. Currans Hill’s story is a unique blend of history and transformation. A place where the past is ever present in its present form. A truly captivating place.
